# Ask

> Questions about code or company documents, read-only: an answer with a link to the file, page or ticket.

**“Ask”** is a mode for questions without changes, **about code or company documents**: Buff reads the project’s source code as well as the trackers, [knowledge sources](/en/docs/connector/knowledge), the internet and [your own MCP servers](/en/docs/connector/custom-mcp) connected through the [connector](/en/docs/connector) — read-only — and answers. It works in any development project, including an ordinary connected repository, and in a [space without code](/en/docs/quickstart/space).

- A new question: “Ask about the project” — read-only, no edits. An example about code: “why does the CSV export fail?”; an example about documents: “What first-response time does the contract promise a client on the ‘Business’ plan, and does it match the FAQ?” — the answer names both documents and the discrepancy between them.
- The answer shows the **“Reasoning”**; Buff may ask a clarifying counter-question with options.
- You can attach files to a message — Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, PDFs, text and, if the model can see images, pictures, up to 10 MB each (see [Attachments](/en/docs/tasks/attachments)); from a phone also photos from the camera, in the [Buff app](/en/docs/mobile). The conversation header shows the usage — **input** and **output** tokens (input counts the cache, output the reasoning) and the cost.
- The list of questions can be filtered by “All / Mine”.
- The model reads connected sources and trackers in any development project: their tools appear when the connection names this project and is running. Answers based on them come with a link to the page or ticket.
- In a [space without code](/en/docs/quickstart/space) the question is asked not about code but about the team’s documents and knowledge: the model reads the connected sources and the knowledge base and answers with links to pages and entries.
