# Decomposition and atoms

> Splitting a task into independent subtasks.

During decomposition the task is split into **atoms** — the smallest independently buildable subtasks — and a **decomposition report** is produced.

In the list, the task unfolds into a tree of atoms with a progress counter (`done / total`). The order and dependencies of the atoms are shown on the [Execution scheme](/en/docs/pipeline/execution-scheme).
