# Preparing development tools

> Development tools: the build and the tests as the project’s baseline.

To develop autonomously, a project needs a **“baseline”** — a reproducible build and tests. They are prepared by the **development tools**.

While there are no tools yet, the [project screen](/en/docs/tasks/project-home) says so with a bar at the top and offers one action: **“Prepare development tools”** (available after a full audit — otherwise the button leads to the audits). Preparation can take a long time; while it runs, the bar leads to the **preparation task**, and the “New task” button is disabled.

The rest of the screen stays in place: the project state and the tasks already created are visible as usual. Once the tools are ready, the bar disappears and you can set tasks.
