Pairing with Buff Code

How to pair a phone with Buff Code on your machine: in the window and in the console, with or without Buff sign-in, the Buff Code service, what the phone shows.

Buff Code on your laptop or workstation pairs with a phone directly: from the phone you can see this machine’s sessions, write to the agent, allow commands and look at changes.

Steps

  1. In the Buff Code window: “Settings → Phone” (Ctrl+,). In the console: the /phone command.
  2. In the window choose “QR code” or “Link and code”; in the console — “+ Pair via QR code” or “+ Pair via link and code”. Pair the phone the same way as with the workspace: scan the QR or enter the link and code, then confirm on the machine (in the console: “Enter — they match · n — this is not my phone”) — the steps in detail.
  3. The machine appears on the app’s home screen next to the other installations.

The phone can reach the machine while the Buff Code service is running on it — it keeps the connection even when the window is closed. If the service is not running, the “Phone” page says so: “The service is not running” — start it in a terminal with buff service start.

With and without Buff sign-in

  • Without signing in to Buff — Buff Code on your own model providers. The phone gets the permissions of the machine’s owner. Only the owner decides.
  • Signed in to an installation (buff.systems, Buff Community or Enterprise) — that installation’s policy applies to the machine: if the organisation or the administrator has forbidden phones, a phone cannot be paired with such a machine, and phones already paired are disconnected. The “Phone” page shows which installation the machine is signed in to.

What the phone shows

  • The machine’s projects and sessions, a new session, the conversation with the agent.
  • Permission requests: the agent wants to run a command or change a file — “Allow”, “Always” or “Reject”, with an answer to the model in the “Why not? The answer goes to the model” field.
  • The agent’s questions — answered right from the phone.
  • The session’s changes, files and terminal.

Sessions started from the phone are marked in the window’s session list (the hint “Started from the phone”), and in the console above the input field it says “Started from the phone “…” — continue here or on the phone, it is one session”. It really is one session: continue on the machine or on the phone — whichever is more convenient.

Notifications from the machine

The machine tells the phone when the agent is waiting for permission, has asked a question, has finished its turn or has failed with an error — no more than once a minute for the same event in the same session, and not to the phone on which that session is currently being viewed.
