Community Edition licence

The terms of the free edition: internal use by one organisation, what is forbidden, and what is sent when the licence is checked.

The full text is the LICENSE.md file in the buff-community repository; here is the gist.

Allowed

  • Install the edition on the organisation’s infrastructure and use it for its internal needs: by employees and contractors, for the organisation’s own tasks.
  • Use it within the licence limits: 3 users, up to 15 concurrent developments, one organisation.
  • A commercial company may use the edition for itself: the restriction is not the nature of the business but passing the product on to others.

The code, documents and reports the edition creates for the organisation belong to the organisation.

Not allowed

  • Selling, renting out, sublicensing or transferring the edition or access to it to third parties.
  • Providing services to third parties with it — as a managed service, hosting or outsourced development — without written consent.
  • Circumventing, disabling or modifying the licence check, its limits or the registration.
  • Removing authorship notices; decompiling; building a competing product on it.

Registration and checks

Registration is done by the administrator in the admin panel, after consenting to data processing: the organisation name, the administrator’s email, the installation identifier and the version are sent. At least once a day there is a licence check, during which only the installation identifier, the version, the number of users and the number of runners are sent. Repositories, tasks, documents and other content are neither requested nor sent.

On our side, the network address and the time of each request from the installation are recorded. The administrator’s email and the addresses are kept for as long as the installation record exists and are needed only to issue and check the licence, to protect against abuse and to get in touch about the licence; at the organisation’s request the record is deleted together with the data — and that installation’s licence ends.

The licence is perpetual. If its terms are breached, we may revoke it: the installation will stop starting new work, but access to the data already created remains. Losing the connection to buff.systems does not end the licence.

Warranty and support

The edition is provided “as is”, without warranties; technical support for Community Edition is not provided, and questions are accepted in the public repository. Third-party components are each under their own licence; they are listed in the repository’s THIRD-PARTY.md. The Russian text of the licence is the authoritative one; the English translation is provided for convenience.
